With Paparazzi, Philippe Malo gives physical form to one of the most striking contradictions of our time: the obsession with image versus ecological urgency. Created from recycled copper wires — noble industrial waste turned into raw material — the sculpture fully embodies the artist’s trash art and récup art approach, where discarded matter becomes a carrier of meaning, memory, and resilience.

The female figure, exaggeratedly elongated, deliberately echoes the unrealistic stereotypes of high-fashion models. This silhouette acts as a critical mirror held up to a culture of appearance — a beauty shaped to be seen, consumed, and discarded. Built from waste materials, it becomes a hollow shell, a silent victim of the endless cycle of production, desire, and abandonment.

Opposition is the driving force behind Paparazzi. On one side, excessive waste and the pursuit of unattainable bodily perfection; on the other, the intrinsic strength and beauty of reclaimed material. The copper wires, with their shimmering texture and reflective glow, catch the light like camera flashes, reinforcing the voyeuristic gaze evoked by the title.

As a sculptural manifesto, Paparazzi transforms the debris of consumption into a fragile yet powerful icon. It celebrates a beauty forged from waste — durable by nature — and invites viewers to reassess not only aesthetic standards but also our responsibility toward the material footprint of our desires.

Industrielle sur pied – 66 in – Metal light assemblage

This 66-inch floor lamp-sculpture fully embodies Philippe Malo’s reimagined industrial aesthetic. Slender and minimalist, it stands on a base made of reclaimed mechanical components, whose solidity contrasts with the refined vertical metal rod rising toward the light.

The tall cylindrical shade, perforated with an irregular, mosaic-like pattern, casts a warm glow and creates subtle graphic shadows on surrounding walls. Its strong verticality and clean lines give the piece a contemporary, almost architectural presence.

Here, the artist highlights the raw beauty of industrial materials: worn surfaces, polished metal, and components transformed from their original purpose. The result is a functional sculpture that shapes the atmosphere while carrying Malo’s distinctive artistic fingerprint.

Industrielle Phare – 30 in – Metal light assemblage

Industrielle Phare is a striking lamp-sculpture built from reclaimed industrial components. Its patinated brass base, shaped with rhythmic rounded forms, gives the piece a strong architectural presence.

Above it, a polished metal chamber supports a vertical cylindrical cage encasing a light bulb. The tall, structured silhouette evokes the visual essence of a contemporary beacon — elevated light framed by a refined industrial form.

The contrast between aged brass, reflective surfaces, and the geometric cage highlights Philippe Malo’s approach: elevating industrial materials, revealing their raw beauty, and transforming them into luminous sculptural objects.

Steampunk lamp – 14 in – Metal assemblage

This lamp-sculpture from the Steampunk series embodies the retro-industrial aesthetic central to Philippe Malo’s creative world. Built from reclaimed metal components—a patinated rounded base, a ribbed copper body, and a perforated shade diffusing warm light—it transforms a functional object into an evocative work of art.

Its design recalls an early 20th-century inventor’s device, a curious machine blending mechanics, history, and imagination. The worn textures, copper tones, and exposed elements highlight the artist’s craft, where industrial heritage is reimagined through illumination.

Both sculpture and functional lamp, this piece captures the essence of steampunk: a meeting of nostalgia, mechanical poetry, and creative reinvention.

Diaz (Les Gardiens series) https://www.galerievieuxstjean.com/en/product/diaz-les-gardiens-series/ Thu, 04 Dec 2025 20:39:54 +0000 https://www.galerievieuxstjean.com/product/diaz-les-gardiens-series/ Original artwork

Diaz – 21 in – Metal assemblage, Les Gardiens series

In Diaz, Philippe Malo brings to life a mechanical being whose fragile, determined posture tenderly transports a cylinder filled with vibrant greenery. Built from worn tools, reclaimed components, and time-marked industrial pieces, this Guardian moves forward with an almost human gentleness, leaning in as if to shield what it carries.

This robotic figure—rusted, articulated, profoundly expressive—embodies the heart of the artist’s post-apocalyptic fable: in a world left in ruins, fragments of hope still persist. Diaz protects life, carries it, preserves it. His gesture becomes an act of resistance and a promise of renewal, upheld by those who refuse to give up.

Named in honour of environmental thinkers and scientists, this Guardian reflects Philippe Malo’s sensitivity as an artist shaped by science fiction, ecological anxiety, and a longing to imagine a future where humanity endures.

Madiba (Série les gardiens) https://www.galerievieuxstjean.com/en/product/madiba-serie-les-gardiens/ Sun, 09 Feb 2025 19:18:07 +0000 https://www.galerievieuxstjean.com/product/madiba-serie-les-gardiens/ With this post-apocalyptic fable, the creator takes us into a future of rust and life. The robotic figures seem to carefully guard these small sources of life. By uniting these rusty, damaged robots with plants, the artist offers a message of hope.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, whose tribal clan name is "Madiba," was born on July 18, 1918, in Mvezo (Cape Province) and passed away on December 5, 2013, in Johannesburg (Gauteng). He was a South African statesman and one of the historic leaders of the struggle against the institutionalized racial segregation system (apartheid). He later became President of the Republic of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, following the country's first non-segregationist national elections.
